British Woman Allegedly Gang-Raped in Delhi Hotel by Man She Met on Instagram: Police

New Delhi: A British woman was allegedly gang-raped by two men at a hotel in Delhi’s Mahipalpur after traveling to India to meet one of them, whom she had befriended on Instagram, police said.

The prime accused, Kailash, a native of Vasundhara, Mayur Vihar in East Delhi, was in touch with the victim on social media for the past few months, the officials said. The woman from London was visiting Maharashtra and Goa before coming to Delhi on Tuesday night to see him. She had booked herself into a hotel in Mahipalpur, where Kailash and his friend Wasim joined her subsequently.

What Occurred in the Hotel?

According to police reports, the three of them had dinner and drank alcohol before going into the woman‘s room. Kailash reportedly forced himself upon her against her will. After she struggled and made a scene, he reportedly invited Wasim into the room to sedate her.
After the woman filed her complaint, Delhi Police apprehended both suspects. While Kailash is charged with rape, Wasim has been arrested on a molestation charge. The British High Commission has been alerted, and the victim is being provided with required help.

Police Investigation Under Way

The authorities are proceeding with their investigation, collecting forensic evidence, and taking statements. The incident again triggered concerns regarding tourist safety in India, especially for women.
