Bengaluru, March 17:
A Bengaluru doctor has been issued a show-cause notice after a disturbing viral video that claimed to show her assaulting her elderly in-laws sparked outrage among the public at large.
Dr. Priyadarshini, a medical officer in emergency at Victoria Hospital of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), is accused of physically abusing and harassing her in-laws, a practice purported to have continued for more than a decade. In spite of pending divorce proceedings, Dr. Priyadarshini is accused of recently visiting her in-laws’ home and physically abusing them, a fact witnessed and uploaded on social networking sites.
Taking note of the viral clip, the Karnataka Medical Education Department acted swiftly. Principal Secretary Mohammad Mohsin denounced the act, calling it an “embarrassment to the department,” and instructed the Director of Medical Education Dr. Sujatha Rathod to serve a show-cause notice on the doctor.
Dr. Priyadarshini has been requested to furnish a written response on the allegations. The notice also threatens possible disciplinary action in the event that she does not reply.
In addition, Principal Secretary Mohsin brought to light a societal concern of broader reach — abandonment of aging parents following transfer of assets — something he has already brought to the notice of Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil, with an appeal for legal action.
In the meantime, a case has been formally registered against Dr. Priyadarshini for her involvement in the incident. Public opinion remains on the rise, with netizens being shocked and calling for stern action.
