“Kangana Ranaut: ‘Oscars Are Silly; Emergency Is the Real Star on Netflix'”

Kangana Ranaut's first solo directorial venture Emergency is now available to stream on Netflix India. The movie fared poorly at the box office upon its theatrical run in January

Mumbai, March17 : Kangana Ranaut’s solo directorial debut, Emergency, may not have been a box office blockbuster when it hit theaters earlier this year, but the film is now receiving rave reviews on Netflix India following its digital premiere.

On Sunday, Kangana took to her Instagram Stories to respond to fans showering praise on the film. One fan’s message read, “Emergency On Netflix should go for the Oscars from India. Kangana, what a film.” In her repost, she fired back, stating, “But America wouldn’t like to acknowledge its real face, how they bully, suppress and arm twist developing nations. It’s been exposed in emergency. They can keep their silly Oscar. We have National Awards.”

In Emergency, Kangana portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a period political drama that spans from her childhood to her tragic assassination in 1984. The film features a dramatic sequence during the 1971 India-Pakistan War, where Indira is seen confronting then-US President Richard Nixon at the White House—an encounter that turns contentious over a cultural faux pas involving her sari.

The film boasts an ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. Despite facing hurdles such as certification challenges and objections from certain groups over its portrayal of historical events, Kangana made necessary changes and saw the film cleared for release on January 17.

Already a four-time National Award winner for her performances in films like FashionQueenTanu Weds Manu Returns, and Manikarnika The Queen of Jhansi, Kangana hinted at the potential of Emergency to be among her best performances yet. Reposting another compliment on Instagram, she challenged critics, “People are calling my acting in #emergency amazing and my best ever, could I surpass Queen, TWM2, Fashion, Thalaivi? Watch #emergency and find out,” accompanied by tricolour emojis.
