A 12-hour Karnataka bandh has been put in place today, March 22, from 6 AM to 6 PM, following a call by Kannada Okkuta, a federation of pro-Kannada outfits, for the bandh. The bandh has been called against the alleged attack on a state-run bus conductor in Belagavi, beaten allegedly for refusing to speak Marathi a development that has again fanned long-standing language rivalries between Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Stringent security measures have been deployed in all major districts to maintain law and order. City Armed Reserve personnel, home guards, and district police personnel are on high alert, guarding sensitive locations to avoid any untoward situation.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar reiterated on Thursday that the state government will not be supporting be supporting the bandh officially, calling for citizens to ensure peace and not affect day-to-day life. While the state stands firm against it, major segments of public transport, shops, and commercial centers are closed, with noticeable effect on day-to-day commuters and traders.

The authorities have asked people to refrain from traveling unnecessarily, ensuring that they are doing everything possible to avert clashes or interruptions. Top police officials have insisted that perpetrators trying to impose closure forcibly will be taken to court.
