Lucknow: A stunning twist emerged when an autorickshaw driver who was suspected of abducting, gang-raping, and killing a 32-year-old woman from Malihabad was gunned down in a police encounter on Friday. An hour earlier in the day, the authorities had announced a reward of ₹1 lakh on the accused.
The woman, whose death has outraged many, was heading to her brother‘s residence in Chinhat from a job interview in Varanasi. She was found unconscious in a mango orchard subsequently, and she was declared dead by doctors at King George‘s Medical University (KGMU).
The Last Moments of the Victim: Live Location Shared Prior to Tragedy
The woman had allegedly taken an autorickshaw from Alambagh early on Wednesday morning, said her family. But the driver took a suspicious route towards Malihabad, instead of to Chinhat.
Feeling threatened, she had sent her live location to her brother and complained about the suspicious route being taken by the driver.
DCP-Crime Kamlesh Kumar Dixit said:
“The brother of the woman reported her missing at around 4 AM on Wednesday. She had informed him about the incorrect path covered by the driver. When the last known location of the woman was located close to Malihabad, the family dialled 112, the police emergency helpline.”

Body Found in Orchard; Case Registered
While conducting the search operation, authorities discovered the woman unconscious in a mango orchard near Mohammad Nagar Talukdari in Malihabad. She was taken to KGMU but was declared dead by doctors.
Police confirmed that an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been lodged. The nature of the incident indicates that several people might have been involved, and an investigation is in progress to seek out any accomplices.
Police Encounter: Accused Shot Dead
The police on Friday apprehended the autorickshaw driver. The accused was shot dead in an encounter, and the victim‘s mobile phone was seized from him.
The authorities have promised that all other suspects connected with the case will be arrested and brought to justice.

The heinous crime has raised concerns over women’s safety, especially regarding public transport during late-night hours. Citizens and activists are demanding stricter verification of autorickshaw and taxi drivers, along with better GPS tracking and safety measures for passengers.
The police have asked people to opt for verified transport services and share their live locations with their family members when they are traveling alone at night. For the case, investigations are still underway, and authorities are committed to providing justice to the victim.
