Opposition Calls for Action Against Police Officers Over Parbhani Custody Death

35-Year-Old Suryawanshi Dies in Judicial Custody During Parbhani Violence Case

Opposition parties on Friday called for the suspension and registration of murder charges against the police officers involved in the custodial death of Somnath Suryawanshi in Parbhani last year.

Now, even the judiciary’s probe has determined that Suryawanshi was killed due to police brutality. Will the Fadnavis government finally wake up and file murder charges against the involved police staff and release them?” asked Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal.

Maharashtra Congress Legislative Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar claimed the report by the magistrate has held that Suryawanshi succumbed to police brutality. “The culprits in the police should be suspended and should face the law. The government has attempted to fool the people of Maharashtra and got exposed now,” Wadettiwar added.

Suryawanshi, 35, succumbed in hospital on Dec 15 last year while he was in judicial custody. Suryawanshi was among those arrested for the violence that broke out during which a mock Constitution was also damaged. Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Congress party, had gone to Parbhani and met the family of Suryawanshi.

Opposition NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar also called for action against the police officers. Party MLA Jitendra Awhad blamed the government for attempting to shield “someone from the beginning.” “There is a judicial magistrate report that has established it was not death, but murder. I want to assure his mother that I won’t rest until she receives justice,” he stated.

“Who gave the orders for the baton charge in Parbhani? Was it the ministry or the DGP office? This needs to be probed. As Home Minister and Chief Minister, Fadnavis has totally failed in the Parbhani case. Suryawanshi was murdered by police brutality, but the government is not serious about it,” Sapkal said.

With increasing pressure from the opposition, calls for justice and accountability in the Parbhani custodial death case are becoming louder. It will be interesting to see how the government reacts to these accusations and calls for action against the police officers involved.
