PM Modi To Open India’s 1st Vertical Lift Pamban Bridge On Ram Navmi
The new Pamban Bridge will come in the place of the aged 1914-constructed bridge, which was shut in 2022 owing to corrosion issues.

New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will offer prayers at Ramanathswamy Temple in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, on April 6 on Ram Navmi.
PM Modi will also inaugurate the new Pamban Bridge on the day.
The new Pamban Bridge will be a replacement for the aging 1914-constructed bridge, which was shut down in 2022 because of corrosion issues.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in November 2024, tweeted on X regarding “India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge.”
“Constructed in 1914, the old Pamban Rail Bridge linked the mainland to Rameswaram for 105 years. It was decommissioned in Dec 2022 due to corrosion and gave way to the new-age New Pamban Bridge, ushering in a new era of connectivity!” he said.
The bridge is more than 2.5 km long and constructed at a cost of Rs 535 crore by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).
“It’s meant to accommodate more rapid trains and more traffic. The New Pamban Bridge isn’t merely functional – it’s a symbol of advancement, bringing people and places together with cutting-edge engineering,” Mr Vaishnaw tweeted on X.
