HIV/AIDS Cases in Tripura Drop from 1,845 in 2022-23 to 1,185 in 2024-25 (Up to January)

Prevalence among adults in Tripura is at 0.33%higher than the national rate of 0.22%ranking the state fifth in the Northeast Regionas per a report from the Health and Family Welfare Department released in the state assembly.

According to the Sankalak Report 2024 released by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), the percentage of adult prevalence of HIV in northeastern states reveals that Tripura records an adult prevalence rate of 0.33%, higher than the national average of 0.22%, the highest among the region’s 5th highest,” reads the report.

Decreasing Cases of HIV/AIDS in Tripura

The report also disclosed a downward trend in HIV and AIDS cases in the state for the last three years. A total of:

  • 1,845 cases were registered in 2022-23
  • 1,790 cases were registered in 2023-24
  • 1,185 cases were registered in 2024-25 (up to January this year)

AIDS-Related Deaths in Tripura

In January, Chief Minister Manik Saha said that, as per a 2023 report by NACO, Tripura had 1.12 AIDS deaths per 1 lakh uninfected individuals in 2021, which was reduced to 0.99 in 2022 but increased again to 1.08 in 2023.

Between 2015-16 and 2023-24, the state saw 512 deaths due to AIDS. The annual distribution of AIDS deaths in Tripura is as follows:

  • 2015-16: 66 deaths
  • 2016-17: 65 deaths
  • 2017-18: 66 deaths
  • 2018-19: 76 deaths
  • 2019-20: 44 deaths
  • 2020-21: 69 deaths
  • 2021-22: 74 deaths
  • 2023-24: 52 deaths

HIV/AIDS Prevention and Treatment in Tripura

In 2023, the Tripura State AIDS Control Society stated that the state reports about 1,500 new cases of HIV/AIDS annually. To check the spread and treat the affected people, the state has opened 154 active screening centers across Tripura. These centers not only test people for HIV and AIDS but also provide free treatment to those who are found positive.

The state government, as well as health organizations, is still engaged in increasing awareness, enhancing medical infrastructure, and increasing accessibility to treatment to prevent the spread of HIV in the area.
