She recently spoke about doing a 21-hour day shift for five months continuously. “Just because I am a different size, it doesn’t mean I am not fit. I can dance for 8-10 hours. I did Jhalak for 12 weeks while I was shooting for Dabba Cartel and one more project.”. Back to back, 5 months. 21-hour days each day. 3 hours of sleep each day. I injured my knee. Following the cue of her disclosure to Bollywood Bubble, let’s know what happens to the body when you have just 3 hours of sleep for 5 months.

Most individuals do not sleep well at night because of busy schedules. However, that is not advisable since it may take a toll on your overall health. “Sacrificing your daily sleep is not advisable and can put you in trouble.”. You can face a variety of health issues that can rob your peace of mind,” warned Dr Harish Chafle, senior consultant, intensivist chest physician, bronchoscopists and sleep disorders specialist, Gleneagles Hospital Parel Mumbai.

Sleeping just three hours a night for five months will definitely damage physical and mental health. Sleep is crucial for brain function, immune system functioning, and overall health,” added Dr Chafle.

How it can influence the body

Cognitive impairment and memory problems: Long-term sleep loss affects concentration, problem-solving ability, and memory. According to Dr Chafle, one might have difficulty remembering things, learning new things, and decision-making. “You will become forgetful and irritable. You will find it hard to remember where you placed the car keys or documents or whether you performed some tasks, for instance, turning off the gas or light,” added Dr Chafle.

Emotional instability: Sleeplessness raises anxiety, stress, and irritation. “You will be frequently frustrated, irritated, and angry, and there will be mood swings,” said Dr Chafle.

Weak immunity: Your immune system becomes weaker, and you become more susceptible to getting colds, flu, and other diseases. “Long-term sleep deprivation can also increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease. It is better to take minimum sleep of 7-8 hours every day without any distraction,” said Dr Chafle.

Toll on physical health: You may feel tired all the time, weak muscles, headache, and delayed reactions. “The risk of obesity also increases, as sleep deprivation interferes with hunger-controlling hormones, causing the desire for junk food like pizza, French fries, bakery products, and sweet foods that cause weight gain,” added Dr Chafle.

Risk of heart disease and hypertension: Lack of sleep can raise blood pressure and stress hormone levels, leading to heart issues in old age.

One must look to get a minimum of 7 to 8 hours of good sleep. For improved sleep, avoid using electronic screens such as mobile phones or laptops while going to bed. “If you can’t sleep or can’t sleep properly, then you should see a doctor. They can evaluate your overall well-being and suggest medicines or lifestyle changes accordingly,” said Dr Chafle.
