Doctor Resigns Due to Threats Following Death of Pregnant Woman at Pune Hospital
The hospital has been under fire ever since the death of Tanisha Bhise, wife of the personal secretary of BJP MLC Amit Gorkhe, who was apparently denied admission for non-payment of a Rs 10 lakh deposit.

Pune:
A gynaecology consultant at Pune’s Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, who is under criticism for the death of a pregnant woman following denial of admission for non-payment of Rs 10 lakh deposit, has submitted his resignation, the hospital reported on Monday.
Hospital medical director Dr Dhananjay Kelkar explained that Dr Sushrut Ghaisas, consulting obstetrician and gynaecologist, had given reasons for his resignation as public fury, social media outrage, and threatening calls.
The hospital has been at the center of a controversy after Tanisha Bhise, the wife of Amit Gorkhe’s personal secretary, was allegedly denied admission due to a Rs 10 lakh deposit not being paid. She died in another hospital after delivering twin daughters.
The relatives of the deceased woman have accused Dr Ghaisas of asking for the deposit before admitting the patient.
Dr Kelkar added, “In his resignation letter, Dr Ghaisas wrote that he is facing huge mental pressure because of public anger, criticism, and threats. He is apprehensive that this will affect his capacity to treat other patients and also jeopardize the safety of his family. To prevent injustice to his work, he has resigned.” The hospital administration has sent the resignation to its trustees, and it is likely to be accepted, he said, adding that Dr Ghaisas will finish his planned surgeries and work till Thursday.
While anger is growing over the incident, women members of the BJP allegedly broke into the clinic of Dr Ghaisas’s mother in Kothrud last week and vandalized property, police said.
