Delhi Woman, 27, Commits Suicides; Writes Note Blaming Man for Harassment

A 27-year-old woman died by suicide last week at her residence in Uttam Nagar, leaving behind a heart-wrenching message and a mobile number in her death. Police, on Friday, said the woman had written on the wall in Hindi, “chhodna mat usko” (don’t spare him), along with a two-page note that complained against a man and his family for harassing her over repayment of a loan.

The woman, a former civil defense volunteer and lab assistant at a private school, was allegedly harassed by the man and his family after she asked them to return over ₹2 lakh she had advanced them to take their mother to the hospital. Her younger sister, 25, said her sister had been threatened and harassed for weeks as the family refused to pay back the loan despite repeated requests.

The tragic accident occurred when the woman’s older sister, 29, came home to discover her body at about 9 PM on Saturday. The authorities established that the woman resided with her mother and siblings in the house at the time of the tragedy.

On the case, police have booked a charge of abetment of suicide under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code at the Uttam Nagar police station. An officer said, “The man and his family members are absconding. We are raiding to catch them.”

The untimely death of the woman raised issues of harassment and economic coercion and has necessitated a closer investigation into what drove her to make such a tragic decision. The case highlights the need for greater awareness and intervention in cases of economic and emotional distress.
