Gujarat Engineering Student Arrested on Charges of Issuing Death Threats to Gautam Gambhir

21-year-old engineering student from Gujarat held for issuing death threats to Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir, probe into motive under way.

New Delhi:
In a dramatic turn of events, Team India head coach and ex-cricketer Gautam Gambhir was the victim of death threats, reportedly of a terror group. However, the probe now indicates that a 21-year-old engineering student from Gujarat named Jigneshsinh Parmar sent out the threatening e-mails.

Parmar was arrested on Friday by the Central District Police team. His family said, after his arrest, that he has been suffering from mental illness. The authorities tracked the terror emails, dated April 22, to a suspicious point of origin, which sent alarm bells ringing particularly because they coincided with the Pahalgam terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 individuals were killed.

The menacing emails to Gambhir were concise but terrifying, with only three words: “I kill you.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M. Harsha Vardhan confirmed the arrest and updated the investigation.
“Parmar is a student of engineering. His family says that he is mentally disturbed. Investigation is underway. We have received a report of a threat mail received on an email ID with Gautam Gambhir. The issue is being probed,” Vardhan said.

Gautam Gambhir, a retired BJP MP, is already under the security cover of Delhi Police. Officials, though, refused to comment on any particular modifications in his security cover after the incident.

The formal complaint of the death threats was lodged at Rajinder Nagar Police Station. It read:
“Dear Sir, Namaskar. While we were conversing, I enclose below the Threat Mails received on the mail ID of  (Ex-Mr.auta Gm GambhirMP), Head Coach, Indian Cricket Team. Please register the FIR accordingly and provide security and safety to the family.”

This is not the first time Gambhir has been threatened. This had happened earlier in 2022 too, which had led to an enhancement of his security arrangements at that time as well.

Gautam Gambhir’s Contribution to Indian Cricket

Beyond his recent role as head coach, Gambhir is celebrated for his key contributions to Indian cricket. He played pivotal roles in India’s triumphs at the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. Under his leadership as head coach, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian side also lifted the Champions Trophy in Dubai in March 2025, marking another feather in his illustrious career.

As the investigations proceed, officials are probing deeper into Parmar’s motives while taking Gambhir and his family into protective custody.
