Massive UPI Outage Halts Payments Throughout India: Google Pay, Paytm, and Top Banks Impacted

Thousands of users throughout India complained of payment failures as a massive UPI outage struck Google Pay, Paytm, SBI, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and others. This is the third major disruption in 30 days.
April 12,2025 : In a major disruption to digital payments across India, the major Unified Payments Interface (UPI) apps were out of order on Saturday, with thousands of users not being able to send or receive funds. The disruption started around 1 PM, which led to more than 2,324 user reports on Downdetector, an application that measures real-time outages through user feedback.
UPI and the Extent of the Outage
UPI, a live payment system supporting peer-to-peer and merchant payments, saw broad failures, with significant effects both on individual customers and businesses. Most of the impacted platforms belonged to banking and UPI operations, as seen from Downdetector information.
Apps and Banks Impacted
- Google Pay: Saw 465 complaints, with the vast majority of users reporting payment failure.
- Paytm : Saw 60 reports, with about 60% having to do with failed transactions.
- State Bank of India (SBI) : Saw 814 complaints, with a majority (67%) referring to online banking failure.
- Axis Bank : Received 79 complaints, primarily related to mobile banking and fund transfer problems.
- Bank of India : Recorded 69 reports from users centered on failed fund transfers.
- Indian Bank : Documented 58 complaints, centered on mobile banking.
- ICICI Bank : Noted 92 complaints regarding interruption in mobile and online banking services.
- Kotak Mahindra Bank : Experienced 67 reports related to online banking problems.
- Bank of Baroda : Had 69 reports, which were primarily regarding fund transfers and online services.
- HDFC Bank : Registered 103 complaints, which were primarily regarding bill payments and online services.
- Federal Bank of India : Registered 32 reports dealing with fund transfer concerns.
- IDBI Bank : Registered 14 isolated reports.
- Yes Bank : Encountered 14 complaints, primarily fund transfer-related.
- IndusInd Bank : Saw isolated reports with minor spikes at 1 PM.
- IDFC Bank : Registered 8 complaints, primarily regarding mobile banking malfunctions.
Third Major Outage in a Month
This incident marks the third significant UPI outage in the last 30 days, highlighting growing concerns over the reliability of digital payment systems in India. Users across the country expressed frustration on social media platforms, citing failed transactions, delayed payments, and inability to access mobile banking services.
Though services stabilized later in the afternoon, the disruption caused significant inconvenience, particularly since digital payments have become a way of life.
The authorities and banks have not yet made an official announcement about the reason behind the outage.
