Indian Army Deploys Operation Keller, Disables Three Militants in Shopian
As part of the ongoing efforts to counter terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army issued a statement announcing the deployment of ‘Operation Keller‘ on Tuesday to target militants in the Shopian district. This operation is the follow-up to Operation Sindoor, earlier conducted to oppose terror operations patronized by Pakistan.
The operation was launched on the basis of precise intelligence given by a Rashtriya Rifles unit about terrorists in the Shoekal Keller area. The Indian Army launched a search and destroy operation in the area and an intense firefight with terrorists ensued. Three “hardcore terrorists“ were killed, the Army confirmed, in the exchange of fire.
In a statement posted on X (then Twitter) by the Indian Army, “OPERATION KELLER On 13 May 2025, on receipt of specific intelligence of a Rashtriya Rifles Unit regarding presence of terrorists in the general area Shoekal Keller, Indian Army conducted a search and destroy operation. Terrorists fired heavy volleys and intense firefight broke out, which led to killing of three hardcore terrorists.”
One of the terrorists killed is identified as one of the top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commanders, Shahid Kuttay, officials said. The top police official established that the three terrorists were all members of LeT and two are known to be Shahid Kuttay and Adnan Shafi. The third terrorist is unidentified.
Shahid Kuttay, who hailed from Chotipora Heerpora of Shopian, had been recruited by LeT in 2023 and was rated as a “Category A“ terrorist, hence one of the top commanders in the group. He was engaged in several terror and anti-national plots, such as the killing of a BJP sarpanch in Heerpora on May 18, 2024. After the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22, 2024, that left 26 people dead, of them mostly tourists, the authorities demolished Kuttay‘s house on April 26 in their crackdown.
The continued operation marks the Indian Army‘s consistent will to stamp out terrorism within the area as well as continue upholding peace and security within Jammu and Kashmir. Additional updates on the operation and the progression of events are anticipated.
