Tragedy befell early yesterday morning when an Air India international flight to London crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The plane, which is AI-147, lost contact with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) minutes after it had taken off at around 5:32 AM IST.
Witnesses close to the airport described the plane to be shaking in the air before descending rapidly and exploding into fire in an open field nearby, approximately 3 kilometers from the runway.
Early reports were that the Boeing 787 Dreamliner had 231 passengers and 16 crew members aboard. Emergency responders converged on the scene, with fire brigades, medical responders, and disaster response units operating in thick smoke and debris scattered throughout.
Authorities of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have started an immediate investigation into the crash, and recovery of black boxes has begun. One senior officer stated, “Preliminary indications indicate a technical failure, but we are keeping all options open at this point.”
Local hospitals are placed on high alert. No official statement regarding casualties or survivors has yet been released, although multiple injured passengers have been airlifted for urgent treatment, according to reports.
Relatives of the passengers have arrived at the airport and are receiving support from Air India officials and local authorities.
