According to the Chhattisgarh Home Minister, cybercriminals stole Rs 107 crore in 18 months, and some victims are considering suicide.

According to Chhattisgarh Home Minister Vijay Sharma, in just 18 months, cybercriminals have taken over ₹107 crore from citizens throughout the state. The minister said that some victims of cybercrime are so distressed that they are considering suicide, expressing serious concern over the growing threat of cybercrime and its emotional toll. According to Sharma, cybercrime is rapidly increasing in rural and semi-urban areas where there is still a low level of digital literacy. Due to a lack of knowledge about basic security procedures and cyber hygiene, particularly among the elderly and financially vulnerable populations, these areas have become easy targets.

According to reports, the state’s cyber cell is overloaded with complaints, and recovering stolen funds is still very difficult. Police are having difficulty tracking down digital traces across borders, even though they have registered cases. The minister called on the federal government to provide financial resources and technological resources for state-level law enforcement to investigate cybercrimes. Government of Chattisgarh is responding by holding workshops seminar and webinars on digital safety and also launching cyber awareness campaigns. In order to aid victims’ emotional recovery and mental support authorities are also collaborating with mental health specialists. The government emphasized that people must report fraud through the national 1930 helpline or the cybercrime.gov.in portal without hesitation.
