Bangladesh takes action against top army general linked to Pakistan over alleged coup plot: Sources
This decision follows reports that the Bangladesh Army chief was alerted about meetings being convened by Lt Gen Faizur Rahman, a known Jamaat sympathizer, without his knowledge.

Bangladesh Army on High Alert After Alleged Coup Attempt by Senior Officer
Bangladesh’s military is on high alert following alarming reports of a possible coup plot involving a senior officer believed to have connections with Pakistan. Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, who currently holds the position of Quarter Master General (QMG) of the Bangladesh Army, is under close scrutiny after allegedly attempting to unseat Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman.
According to sources cited by *India Today*, General Waker-Uz-Zaman ordered Lt Gen Faizur Rahman to be monitored after intelligence revealed suspicious meetings and activities within the army. Lt Gen Rahman, known for his ties to the Islamist political party Jamaat-e-Islami, reportedly held discussions with key divisional commanders (GOCs) without the Army Chief’s consent, prompting immediate concern.
In early March 2025, Lt Gen Rahman called for a high-level meeting with senior commanders, but the Army Chief’s secretariat quickly flagged the gathering. Once the Army’s intelligence unit became aware of the meeting, senior officers were alerted and chose to withdraw. This incident, along with reports of Rahman’s numerous meetings with Pakistani diplomats and Jamaat leaders earlier in the year, raised significant red flags within the military.
The alleged connections between Lt Gen Rahman and Jamaat leadership, which has historically had close ties with Pakistan, have intensified worries. The increasing influence of Jamaat-e-Islami within the military and its potential implications for national security are major concerns for the current government. Insiders suggest that these secretive meetings have led to suspicions that Lt Gen Rahman is trying to rally support within the military to challenge the Army Chief’s authority.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman, aware of the rising tensions in the country, is also facing pressure from political circles.
