Ratan Tata’s Will: A Legacy of Thoughtful Donations and Generosity

Seasoned entrepreneur Ratan Tata, who died in October 2024, made sure that his estate was divided with great care, considering his commitment to his employees as well as philanthropic causes.In an October 2024 report by The Times of India, Tata’s will provided for more than ₹3 crore to be donated to his household and office employees for their years of loyal service.

Liberal Bequests to Long Serving Employees

Tata directed his executors to give ₹15 lakh of his estate to home servants who had served him for seven years and more, where the amount allocated was proportional to their years of service.

Among his long-time employees, his chef, Rajan Shaw, was given over ₹1 crore, including a waiver of a loan of ₹51 lakh. His butler, Subbaiah Konar, was left ₹66 lakh, with a waiver of a loan of ₹36 lakh, while his secretary, Delnaz Gilder, was given ₹10 lakh. Tata also waived off an ₹18 lakh loan for his chauffeur, Raju Leon.

Tata also demonstrated his kindness towards his executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu, by exempting him from a ₹1 crore loan given for pursuing an MBA at Cornell University. The will directed that none of these loans were to be recovered, rather, they were to be treated as gifts from Tata to the respective recipients.

Philanthropic Commitments

The major part of Ratan Tata’s ₹3,800-crore fortune was bequeathed to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust, so his legacy of philanthropy would keep making a difference in society. Further, Tata instructed that his wardrobe, which includes labels such as Brooks Brothers, Hermes, Polo, Daks, and Brioni, be gifted to NGOs to assist needy people.

Special Mention for His Pet

A confirmed animal lover, Tata made special arrangements for his beloved German Shepherd, Tito. He set aside ₹12 lakh for Tito’s upkeep, with ₹30,000 to be paid quarterly. His cook, Rajan Shaw, was left in charge of Tito’s upkeep.
