Whopping Increase in Aadhaar Face Authentication Usage
New Delhi: The Aadhaar face authentication solutions, made by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), have seen tremendous growth, with more than 78 percent of the total transactions done in FY25 alone, said the government.
Ever since the face authentication solution was launched in October 2022, UIDAI has seen a total transaction figure of more than 130.5 crore, of which around 102 crore transactions were in the financial year 2024-25.
“It reflects the increased usage, adoption of this solution and the way it is augmenting Aadhaar number holders easily,” the IT Ministry stated.
Increase in Transactions in 2024
During the January-March 2024 quarter, there were almost 39.5 crore face authentication transactions. More than 15.25 crore transactions alone occurred in March, a 21.6 percent rise over the last month, the ministry stated. This record highlights the faith and usage of this biometric authentication modality in various industries, such as fintech, finance, and telecom, the ministry added.
Role in Government Services and Beneficiary Programs
A few government schemes have incorporated Aadhaar face authentication to enable smooth disbursal of benefits to the targeted beneficiaries. Flagship schemes like PM Awas (Urban), PM E-Drive, PM-JAY, PM Ujjwala, PM Kisan, and PM Internship have embraced this mode of authentication to increase efficiency and accessibility.
Face recognition is also showing itself to be a strong substitute for older adults and those encountering issues with fingerprint recognition because of manual labor or health status.
Widening Use Across Industries
Presently, 102 government and private sector entities are using Aadhaar face authentication. This AI-based modality works effectively on both Android and iOS devices. It is made secure against video replay attacks and static photo authentication attempts by malicious parties. The contactless, anytime-anywhere authentication mode increases convenience without compromising stringent security standards.
The revolutionary technology enables users to identify themselves using only a face scan, ensuring that simplicity is achieved while bolstering effective security procedures, the ministry added.
