Ratan Tata’s Will: A Legacy of Thoughtful Donations and Philanthropy

Businessman and ex-Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata has left behind a legacy of philanthropy that leaves his wealth in the service of a larger cause even after his lifetime. Much of Tata’s personal fortune worth ₹3,800 crore was left to charity and those who were close to him at the time of his death, reports The Economic Times.

His February 23, 2022, will directs how his huge fortune, property, assets, and cash are divided to loved ones, acquaintances, and charity organizations.
A Majority Legacy for Philanthropy

The majority of Tata’s wealth, including his holding in Tata Sons, has passed to the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust and the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation.The trusts are dedicated to charity, keeping Tata’s abiding interest in social causes and country-building alive.

Individual Bequests and Financial Distribution

Among the prominent beneficiaries, Mohini M Dutta, an ex-colleague of the Tata Group, will get one-third of his monetary assets worth ₹800 crore. His half-sisters Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy will get an equal portion of these assets.

His Juhu bungalow has been bequeathed equally between his brother Jimmy Tata (82)—his sole surviving family member—and other relatives, including Simone Tata and Noel Tata. His Alibaug property has, however, been willed to his personal friend Mehli Mistry, to whom Tata attributed being “instrumental in making this property possible.”

Support for Employees and Loyal Staff

Ratan Tata’s will also recognizes his long-serving employees and associates:

  • Dilnaz Gilder, secretary of Tata, will get ₹10 lakh.

  • Rajan Shaw & family, long-time home staff, will get ₹50 lakh.

  • Subbaiah Konar, reliable driver, will get ₹30 lakh.

    ₹12 Lakh Reserved for Pet Care

    A renowned pet lover, Tata made sure that his pets were taken care of. He reserved ₹12 lakh for their upkeep, ensuring ₹30,000 each quarter to maintain them.

    Loan Waivers and Financial Support

    As a gesture of largesse, Tata forgave:

  • An education loan taken by his executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu.

  • An interest-free loan taken by a neighbor, Jake Malite.

    Foreign Assets and Luxuries

    Tata’s foreign assets amounting to around ₹40 crore comprise:

  • Land plots in Seychelles.

  • Investments in firms such as Alcoa Corp and Howmet Aerospace.

  • Bank accounts in Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley.

    His will also includes a beautiful array of 65 luxury watches owned by watchmakers such as Bvlgari, Patek Philippe, Tissot, and Audemars Piguet, as well as silver items and some jewelry.

    Probate and Legal Proceedings

    The will, comprising four codicils (post-signature amendments), is now being probated in the Bombay High Court—a judicial process to verify its validity.The will executors—lawyer Darius Kambatta, Mehli Mistry, and Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy—must wait for certification by the court before they can start distributing assets. The process will last for six months.

    Ratan Tata, who died on October 9, 2024, lived his life dedicated to business, charitable activities, and the welfare of his fellow human beings. His thoughtfully made will makes sure that his wealth is donated to his beloved causes and individuals, keeping his legacy intact of being charitable and serving the public.
