APK Scam Hits Andhra Pradesh: Cybercrooks Hijack Phones, Drain Bank Accounts

Cybercriminals deceive gullible people into downloading malicious apps that covertly take over smartphones and steal money from bank accounts. Andhra Pradesh authorities have issued a strong warning against this new wave of APK scams.

Police say the scam usually starts with a WhatsApp link or text message that looks like a real service, like a job offer, loan approval, or courier notification. In order to give hackers remote access to their device, victims are advised to download an Android Package Kit (APK) file, which installs malware.Once inside, scammers can start illegal banking transactions, read SMS messages, and record OTPs.

The state has already seen a number of cases where victims reported unexpected withdrawals totaling thousands of rupees following the installation of dubious apps. The malware is sophisticated, operating covertly to evade detection while continuously monitoring keystrokes and communication, according to investigators.

A senior official from the Andhra Pradesh Cybercrime Division stated, “This is a digital home invasion, not just a scam.” The attackers take total control of your device, which gives them access to banking apps, passwords, and personal information.

The state police have advised people to download apps only from reliable sources, such as the Google Play Store, and to proceed with extreme caution. Additionally, they recommended that users turn off “Install from Unknown Sources” on their devices and notify the national cybercrime helpline right away of any suspicious messages (1930).

The scam, according to cybersecurity experts, is part of a growing trend that targets India’s rapidly growing smartphone user base. The stakes are higher than ever for gullible users as digital payments become more commonplace.

The first line of defense, officials emphasized, is awareness. “It only takes one thoughtless click to give your phone—and your money—to criminals,” one investigator stated.
