With cybercrime on the rise, Patna will establish cyber forensic units.

August 13, 2025, Patna With a ₹13 crore investment and technical assistance from the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), Bihar has authorized the establishment of specialized cyber forensic labs in Patna and Rajgir as part of a comprehensive response to the surge in cybercrime.
A Sharp Increase Demands Immediate Action
From 1,606 cases in 2022 to 4,801 in 2023 and 5,712 in 2024, Bihar has seen a sharp increase in cybercrime. In the first five months of this year alone, 3,258 cases were reported.
Approximately 2.5 million calls were handled by the state’s 24-hour National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (1930 helpline) in 2024–2025. Additionally, the portal received nearly 94,000 complaints nationwide, 80,000 of which were related to financial fraud.
Developing Forensic Skills with Strict Time Limits
In 2024, the state’s Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Patna had already looked into 255 cybercrime cases, with 135 of them being resolved. The FSL received 206 cases by July 2025, and 75 of those cases resulted in reports.
The government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NFSU on July 29 for a five-year consultancy that includes lab setup, training, and technical support in an effort to improve forensic speed and quality.
Why You Care About This
Scams like phishing, phony customer calls, identity theft, and online banking frauds are now more common among citizens.
Faster forensic analysis translates into better deterrence, quicker justice, and quicker case action.
Additionally, by developing skills and training officers locally, a state-of-the-art lab lessens the need for facilities outside the state.
