Government Introduces ‘Future Skills Labs’ in 500 Government Schools
New Initiative Focuses on Robotics, Coding, and Practical STEM Learning for Students

In a significant move to modernize classroom learning, the Ministry of Education has launched a new initiative titled Future Skills Labs across 500 government schools in the first phase. The program aims to equip students with practical exposure to robotics, coding, artificial intelligence, and hands-on science experiments, preparing them for technology-driven careers.
The initiative is part of the broader National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 reforms, which emphasize experiential learning and skill development from an early age. Under the scheme, selected schools will receive advanced lab equipment including robotics kits, 3D printers, programmable microcontrollers, and interactive digital boards. Teachers will also undergo specialized training to effectively guide students in these emerging technologies.
Education officials stated that the program is designed to reduce the gap between private and government school facilities. “Our goal is to ensure that students in rural and semi-urban areas receive the same exposure to modern technology as those in urban private institutions,” a senior ministry official said during the launch event.
The labs will operate as innovation hubs where students can work on real-life problem problem-solving projects. Weekly activity sessions will be included in the timetable, allowing learners to design simple robots, develop basic mobile applications, and participate in coding challenges. Students showing exceptional performance may also receive mentorship opportunities from technology institutes and industry experts.
Several state governments have welcomed the move and announced support in expanding the project to more schools in the coming academic year. Education experts believe the initiative will not only improve digital literacy but also encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity among students.
Parents have responded positively, expressing hope that such initiatives will open new career pathways for their children. “Learning coding and robotics at school level will give students a strong foundation for future studies,” said Anil Verma, a parent from Lucknow.
The Ministry has confirmed that the success of the first phase will determine further expansion nationwide. If implemented effectively, Future Skills Labs could play a crucial role in building a skilled and innovation-ready generation in India.
