Urban Lake Revival Brings New Life to Eastern Kolkata Neighborhoods

Community-Led Restoration Project Improves Water Quality, Biodiversity, and Local Livelihoods.

An ambitious community-driven lake restoration project in eastern Kolkata has begun showing visible results, transforming a once-polluted urban water body into a thriving ecological and social space. The initiative, launched jointly by local residents, municipal authorities, and environmental groups, aims to restore the lake’s natural ecosystem while addressing long-standing issues of waterlogging and waste accumulation in nearby neighborhoods.

For decades, the lake had suffered from untreated sewage inflow, plastic dumping, and unchecked encroachment. During monsoon seasons, clogged channels caused frequent flooding in surrounding residential areas. In mid-2025, concerned citizens formed a neighborhood action committee that worked closely with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to develop a phased revival plan. The project officially entered its implementation stage in October last year.

Key measures included desilting the lake bed, installing floating trash barriers, and diverting sewage lines to nearby treatment facilities. Native aquatic plants such as water lilies and reeds were reintroduced to naturally filter pollutants and stabilize the shoreline. Rainwater harvesting channels were also created to replenish groundwater and reduce surface runoff.According to municipal officials, preliminary water quality tests conducted in January 2026 indicate a significant drop in biological contaminants compared to last year. Residents have already noticed clearer water and reduced foul odor. “For the first time in years, we can open our windows without worrying about the smell,” said a local shopkeeper whose business overlooks the lake.

The revival has also brought back biodiversity. Migratory birds have begun returning, and small fish populations are reappearing, delighting children and morning walkers. Environmental volunteers conduct weekly awareness drives, educating people about waste segregation and the importance of keeping plastic out of water bodies.

Beyond environmental benefits, the project has created short-term employment for local youth in cleaning, plantation, and maintenance work. Plans are underway to develop a walking track and a small biodiversity park along the lake’s perimeter, ensuring the area remains both protected and accessible.

Urban planners see this initiative as a model for sustainable local development. With Kolkata facing increasing pressure on its natural drainage systems due to rapid urbanization, such community-backed projects could play a crucial role in climate resilience.

As the lake slowly regains its health, residents say the revival has restored more than just water—it has renewed a sense of ownership and pride in the neighborhood.
