Winter Olympics 2026 in Turmoil as Blizzard Forces Event Delays & Surprises
Heavy snowfall in northern Italy throws competition schedules into disarray
MILAN–CORTINA, Italy — The 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics has faced significant disruptions this week as extreme winter weather conditions impact several marquee competitions and athlete preparations in Italy’s northern alpine venues. A powerful blizzard and heavy snowfall have overwhelmed local infrastructure and sports schedules, leading to postponed events, travel delays, and unexpected challenges for competitors and organizers alike.
Organizers and athletes had braced for typical winter elements at the globally anticipated Games, but the recent storm proved more disruptive than expected. In the Livigno Snow Park and surrounding alpine regions, several freestyle skiing events—including halfpipe and aerials competitions—were delayed or rescheduled due to unsafe snow conditions and reduced visibility. Officials moved men’s aerials qualifiers and finals to Friday morning, and pushed back halfpipe qualifying runs to later in the weekend to ensure athlete safety.
Meanwhile, heavy snowfall didn’t just affect outdoor slope events. Even indoor ice competitions saw ripple effects from the blizzard. In Cortina d’Ampezzo, severe weather brought traffic to a standstill, forcing some Olympic curling teams to abandon buses and walk through deep snow just to reach the Curling Olympic Stadium on time. The U.S. team managed to secure a victory over Switzerland despite the chaos, while organizers delayed later sessions by roughly 30 minutes to accommodate travel issues.
Amid the schedule challenges, the Olympic program still delivered dramatic sporting moments. In the Nordic combined team sprint, Norway claimed gold in a thrilling race where snowy conditions tested athletes’ endurance and strategy, with teams navigating slippery courses and limited visibility.
Organizers emphasized that adapting to unpredictable weather is part of staging winter sports, especially at high-altitude venues already prone to heavy snowfall. They reiterated that, while some events have been shuffled or delayed, the overall Games schedule remains on track for its planned closing ceremony on Sunday.
As athletes and fans alike adjust to the evolving conditions, the Winter Olympics continue to highlight both the thrill and unpredictability of elite sport under Mother Nature’s influence.
