Tamil Nadu Cyber Police DGP Issues Warning about Cyber Frauds Associated with Shreya Ghoshal Commercials on X

Dr. Sandeep Mittal, the Additional Director General of Police at Tamil Nadu’s Cyber Crime Wing, gave a warning about scammers using “Shreya Ghoshal ads” on social media. In a message posted on Thursday, Dr. Mittal warned that some of the verified X (formerly Twitter) accounts with just 10 to 15 followers are advertising fabricated news articles about the iconic singer to cheat innocent netizens with cyber scams.

Scam Traps and Fraudulent Ads

Dr. Mittal pointed out the increasing threat of such scams, where bogus posts are presented as news reports, appearing to be from trusted sources such as *The Indian Express*. He posted two screenshots of such bogus posts to warn people about the rising trend of using celebrity names and their promotion for malicious reasons. “Confirmed @X Handles, 10 to 15 followers, selling Shreya Ghoshal Ads are scam traps to entice public into cyber scams,” he posted. “Be cautious, be safe… @X must have a system to identify and block such handles openly indulging in criminal acts.”

His advice was made during a period when social media platforms have been under fire for failing to stop fraudulent activities and fake accounts, prompting questions about platform moderation effectiveness.

Shreya Ghoshal’s Hacked X Account

The warning is also coming only a few days after singer Shreya Ghoshal announced on Instagram that her X account was hacked. On February 13, Ghoshal broke the shocking news to her followers, stating that she had not been able to get back her account despite numerous efforts to contact the X team.

Ghoshal wrote in her post, “Hello friends and fans. My Twitter / X account has been hacked since February 13th. I have done everything in my power to contact the X team. But nothing has been received beyond a couple of auto-response messages.” She cautioned her fans not to reply to any messages or click on any links shared from her hacked account, which were phishing attempts.

“Please don’t click on any link or take any message sent from that account. They are all spams and fishing (phishing) links,” Ghoshal further said. The singer also vowed to personally inform her followers if she was able to retrieve her account. “I will update personally through a video if the account is recovered and is safe.”

Growing Cyber Threats

This case points to an emerging issue of cybersecurity in the age of the internet, especially with the widespread use of social media by individuals and celebrities alike. Scammers tend to use the names of celebrities to design deceptive advertisements and phishing schemes, taking advantage of people’s trust and curiosity.

Given the recent events, Dr. Mittal stressed the importance of enhanced detection and blocking features on platforms such as X in order to avoid such criminal elements. He also called for users to stay vigilant and report suspicious accounts and activity to the authorities.

The Need for Vigilance

As cyber fraud gets more and more sophisticated, it’s vital that netizens remain vigilant and not fall victim to bogus schemes. Dr. Mittal’s advice is a reminder that even authentic social media accounts can be hacked, and users need to always check the credibility of any post, link, or message before they interact with them.

Overall, it is vital for both platform administrators and its users to guard themselves against such . Celebrities such as Shreya Ghoshal, being the pioneers on social media platforms, still find themselves struggling against hackers and scamsters, yet their experience makes a valuable warning to all against proceeding without being cautious in exploring cyberspaces.
