Arun Gawli Walks Out of Jail After 17 Years Behind Bars
Mumbai: After spending more than 17 years in prison, gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli walked out of Nagpur Central Jail on Wednesday. The 76-year-old was granted bail by the Supreme Court in a 2007 murder case.
Gawli was serving a life sentence for the murder of Mumbai Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar. The Supreme Court noted that he had already spent over 17 years in jail and that his appeal was still pending.
“After completing all the legal formalities, Gawli was released around 12:30 pm,” an official said. Outside the jail, he was greeted warmly by his family, lawyer, and supporters.
Gawli had been booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), and his bail comes with the conditions set by the trial court. He had earlier challenged the 2019 Bombay High Court verdict, which had upheld his life sentence.
Rising to prominence from the Dagdi Chawl area of Byculla, Gawli founded the Akhil Bharatiya Sena and served as an MLA from 2004 to 2009, representing Mumbai’s Chinchpokli constituency.
After nearly two decades behind bars, Gawli’s release marks a significant chapter in his long and controversial journey from the world of organised crime to politics.
