Police in Bengaluru Start an Awareness Campaign to Reduce Cybercrime

As instances of digital scams continue to increase throughout Karnataka, Bengaluru Rural Police have started a new cybercrime awareness campaign to empower citizens to defend themselves against online fraud.
As part of the campaign, a website with QR codes will be launched, enabling locals to report suspicious activity and obtain verified information about cyberthreats in a flash. Additionally, police have distributed flyers outlining common scam tactics like phishing, OTP fraud, and phony investment schemes, created instructional videos, and held workshops in community centers and schools.
The initiative, according to Dr. Mallikarjun Baladandi, Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru Rural, aims to close the communication gap between law enforcement and the public in the battle against cybercrime. People frequently become victims due to ignorance. We can prevent fraud before it occurs by providing them with the necessary resources and information,” he stated.
According to officials, financial scams continue to be the most frequently reported type of cybercrime in the area, with social media impersonation and fraud related to employment coming in second and third. Instead of depending only on word-of-mouth alerts, the police advised the public to verify digital transactions, report fraud through official portals, and refrain from disclosing personal information to unknown callers.
The drive comes as India faces a nationwide surge in cybercrime cases. Proactive steps like Bengaluru’s initiative, according to experts, could be a template for other states that are having trouble preventing online fraud. The incorporation of QR technology was also commended by cybersecurity experts, who described it as a “practical step” toward increasing accessibility to cyber education.
The message is unmistakable for locals: awareness is their first line of defense. Police warn that cybercriminals are growing more daring as the digital economy grows, and that the only way to lessen their influence is for the public to be informed.
