Jharkhand’s Cybercrime Epidemic Spreads Outside of Jamtara

Jharkhand has witnessed a dramatic increase in cybercrime, which has spread to districts like Deoghar, Dhanbad, Giridih, and Koderma, far beyond the notorious hotspot of Jamtara. State cyber police have recently reported that the number and complexity of online fraud cases have increased significantly over the past year, reflecting a change in tactics and geography.

Jamtara has long been notorious for phishing scams and SIM swapping, making it India’s center for cybercrime. More complex schemes, such as digital arrests, remote access malware, WhatsApp link frauds, and phony investment apps, are being carried out by new fraud networks that are now active from various locations throughout the state.

The magnitude of the problem is demonstrated by the fact that since late 2023, law enforcement agencies have arrested over 1,976 people in cases involving cybercrime. The use of inexpensive smartphones, readily available digital payment systems, and public ignorance of cybersecurity are the reasons given by police officials for this growth.

Using WhatsApp video calls, scammers pose as law enforcement or government representatives to trick victims into sending money under false pretenses. Another technique involves tricking victims into downloading APKs or clicking on malicious links that give the scammer remote control access.

The Jharkhand government has started community awareness campaigns, improved digital forensics infrastructure, and stepped up cyber surveillance in an effort to counter this growing threat. Additionally, there are plans to increase the number of cyber police stations and assign more district-level cyber-trained staff.

Authorities advise people to stay vigilant, stay away from unknown calls or links, and report any suspicious activity to their local police or the national cybercrime portal.

The alarming trend of cybercrime spreading throughout Jharkhand emphasizes the urgent need for stronger enforcement and preventative measures to protect digital users in both urban and rural areas.
