Landslide hits Mumbai’s Kurla killing two people, others missing after rainfall
A landslide occurred in Mumbai's Kurla locality after heavy rains battered the city on Tuesday.
Two people have lost their lives, while six others are believed to be buried under the rubble following a landslip that occurred in Mumbai’s Kurla region during the early hours of Wednesday due to incessant rains.
According to the police, the rescue efforts are on and various teams from BMC, NDRF and other agencies have been deployed to the spot. The accident happened around 3 am, as per DCP Ganesh Shinde, who further added that about four-five people are believed to be buried under the rubble.
“Due to rain, there has been a landslip in the Ashok Nagar area which falls under the Ghatkopar police station. So far, two bodies have been found. Rescue efforts are on. Our police personnel are here, along with all the necessary teams for the rescue operations including those from the BMC, NDRF and other agencies. It happened around 3 AM. About four-five people are likely to be trapped,” DCP Ganesh Shinde told news agency ANI.
The mayor of Mumbai, Ritu Tawde, had also arrived at the scene to direct the efforts of search and rescue.
On Tuesday, the city of Mumbai received heavy rains as an advisory was issued by SpiceJet for passengers.
Mumbai has been experiencing heavy rainfall in recent weeks, which has led to the disruption of air traffic in the airport of the city. Apart from this, the monsoon rains have also led to water logging and disruption of services in the roads and transport sector in Mumbai. The Meteorological Department of India has issued warnings in case of heavy rains.
Two dead, two injured till now
According to the officials, two people have been injured in the accident, who have been identified as Sohel Ansari, aged 18 years, and Mohamad Ansari, aged 14 years.
The two victims of death have been confirmed as Sahil Ansari aged 28 and Mohamad Samir aged 14 who were pronounced dead at Rajawadi Hospital.
The visuals taken from the place of landslide indicated that family members of the deceased were mourning while people around them were offering their consolation as the ambulances carted away the dead bodies.
Two dead in fire accident
The landslides occurred hours after the deaths of two individuals while six others were injured due to a fire accident in a 12 storey residential building in Mumbai’s Vile Parle region.
The fire started in two flats in the 11th floor of the Shanta Bhavan Building at about 10 pm on Tuesday, the officials reported through news agency ANI.
Fire spread to electrical installations and an AC unit and other household items within an area of 4,000 square feet within the two flats, the officials reported. A total of eight persons including two firemen got injuries.
A child aged 2-and-a-half years named Abir and a 23-year-old woman named Ankita were pronounced dead in the Nanavati Hospital, said a civic official.
