Death of DY Patil at 90: Saluting the educationist who received the Padma Shri award
Starting from a little village in Maharashtra to the Raj Bhavans of three different states, Padma Shri Dr Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil has created a vast network of education institutions in the country. With his demise at the age of 90, his illustrious career in education and healthcare comes to an end.
Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, one of the most renowned educators of India and Governor of Bihar, Tripura, and West Bengal, passed away at his residence in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, on Tuesday morning. He was 90.
Through almost half a century of service, he made himself synonymous with private education in Maharashtra, where he established a chain of schools, colleges, universities and hospitals, educating lakhs of people in India.
To many students, DY Patil became more of a name rather than a person. It was from his institutions that doctors, engineers, managers, dentists, nurses, and researchers emerged.
THE BOY FROM THE VILLAGE WHO DREAMED BIG
Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil was born on 22 October 1935 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. He was born in an agricultural family. He did his graduation from Rajaram College, Kolhapur and then went on to study law from Shivaji University and graduated in law with first class honors.
Even though Patil was a qualified lawyer, his greatest contribution has been made in the classroom rather than the courtroom.
THE MAN WHO BUILT CAMPUSES AND NOT JUST COLLEGES
Dr Patil is often hailed as one of the pioneering individuals in the field of private education in Maharashtra. In an era where opportunities for professional education were scarce, he made sure that institutes teaching courses in engineering, medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, agriculture, management, architecture, and others were set up.
Gradually, with time, the DY Patil Group came to spread across cities like Kolhapur, Navi Mumbai, Pune, and others, and finally reached up to a hundred-plus institutions of education and healthcare establishments. Many of these eventually transformed into universities in the fields of medicine and technology.
However, his vision did not stop there. The hospitals associated with these institutions soon became centers of medical education and practice.
WHEN EDUCATION LED HIM TO RAJ BHAVAN
While his main concern remained education, he also occupied key constitutional offices.
Prior to being appointed as Governor of Bihar, he had been appointed as the Governor of Tripura. He eventually became the Governor of West Bengal, thus becoming one of the rare educationists to preside over more than one Raj Bhavan. As Governor, he always kept himself close to the universities and higher educational institutions.
These appointments testified to the respect that he commanded outside the field of education.
PADMA SHRI FOR LIFELONG CONTRIBUTIONS
The Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards that India bestows on individuals, has been conferred upon Dr Patil in acknowledgment of his contributions to the realm of education and social work. This was in recognition of his decades of efforts at improving access to professional education by establishing institutions that catered to students from all over India.
Other fields where he made his contributions included philanthropy, healthcare, and sports infrastructure.
MORE THAN JUST A NAME AT THE CAMPUS
Generations of students grew up seeing DY Patil’s name on the gates of universities, academic certificates, and hospitals. The man behind the name was one who firmly believed that education was the key to making a difference in people’s lives.
His death is an end of an era but the educational institutions that he started still influence the Indian educational scenario, and the legacy that he has left will endure in the millions of students educated at his institutions.
