Veteran Congress Leader Shivraj Patil Passes Away at 90
Experienced politician and former Union Home Minister and Speaker of Lok Sabha Shivraj V. Patil passed away on Friday at 90 years of age. Patil died at his residence in Latur, Maharashtra, after a brief illness. According to sources, Patil had been unwell for some time before he met with his tragic end. Patil’s death brings an end to an illustrious career spanning almost four decades.
Patil entered mainstream politics via local politics in the state of Maharashtra. His parliamentary career began as he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Latur in 1980. Since then, he retained the same seat seven times. During these years, he took up various ministerial portfolios. Moreover, he is remembered as a parliamentarian with a indepth understanding of business procedures. Patil served as the 10th Speaker of Lok Sabha from 1991-1996.
In 2004, he became the Home Minister in the UPA government and remained so till 2008. During his term, there were large internal security problems, and the biggest amongst them was the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai. Post this attack, he resigned, taking responsibility for the lapses. Patil went on to hold roles as Governor of Punjab and its Administration Head for Chandigarh from 2010-2015.
Patil leaves behind his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana Patil, and two daughters. Leaders belonging to all political parties have expressed sorrow at his death, remembering him for serving as a long-serving, committed constitutionalist with a cool leadership trait. Although he had instances of criticism against him, Patil was remembered for his commitment to public life and democratic institutions.
