Mumbai: Man Booked for Abetment to Suicide After Wife’s Death in Mulund
Mumbai: In a deeply distressing incident from Mulund, the police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against 40-year-old Kawaljeet Singh Harisingh Dhillon following the death of his wife, 35-year-old Amritpal Kaur Kawaljeet Singh Dhillon.
What appears at first to be a legal case is, in truth, a heartbreaking story of a woman who reportedly suffered in silence for years — trapped between love, duty, and despair.
A Marriage That Began with Hope
Amritpal married Kawaljeet in 2013 and moved into his family home in Amarnagar, Mulund (West). In the early years, their life seemed stable, and the couple was blessed with a son, now 11 years old. To neighbours and relatives, they appeared like any ordinary family trying to make ends meet in Mumbai.
But behind closed doors, a different story was unfolding.
Strain, Addiction, and Abuse
According to the FIR lodged by Amritpal’s mother, 60-year-old Paramjit Kaur from Ulhasnagar, things began to change around seven years ago when Kawaljeet — who worked as a private driver for a call centre — developed a serious alcohol addiction.
He allegedly began returning home drunk late at night, often becoming violent. Amritpal confided in her mother about frequent physical assaults and expressed fears about her husband’s suspected extramarital affair. She reportedly endured not just emotional neglect, but prolonged humiliation and loneliness.
Repeated Attempts at Reconciliation
Despite the abuse, Amritpal made several attempts to hold the family together. During frequent disputes, she would return to her maternal home, seeking temporary peace. On multiple occasions, her in-laws — Ranjit Kaur (60) and Hira Singh Dhillon (63) — intervened and brought her back, hoping for reconciliation.
But things only worsened with time.
The Final Call
In the early hours of October 12, around 5 AM, Paramjit Kaur received a call from her son-in-law’s family. They informed her that Amritpal had been rushed to Agarwal Hospital and asked her to come immediately.
By the time she arrived, it was too late.
Amritpal had reportedly died by suicide after hanging herself at home. The woman who had fought for her marriage and her child — seemingly ran out of strength.
Legal Action Underway
Based on the complaint filed by her mother, the Mulund police have registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), holding Kawaljeet responsible for allegedly driving his wife to suicide through ongoing physical and mental harassment, reportedly aggravated by alcoholism and an alleged affair.
The investigation is ongoing.
A Silent Crisis in Many Homes
Amritpal’s story is not an isolated one. Many women across the country endure abuse quietly, hoping things will change — often for the sake of their children. Some survive. Others, tragically, do not.
If you or someone you know is facing emotional or physical abuse, please reach out for help. Silence should never be the only option.
