Floating Classrooms Bring Education to Flood-Prone Villages in Assam

A community-led initiative ensures uninterrupted learning for children during annual floods.

Assam, India – February 5, 2026:

In a remarkable example of community resilience, floating classrooms are transforming access to education in Assam’s flood-prone riverine villages. As annual monsoon floods continue to disrupt daily life across the Brahmaputra basin, this innovative initiative is ensuring that children’s learning does not come to a halt when schools are submerged.

The floating classrooms, locally known as Nauka Shiksha Kendras, are specially designed boats equipped with benches, blackboards, solar-powered fans, and basic learning materials. Launched through a collaboration between local NGOs, village councils, and volunteer teachers, the project currently operates in over 40 flood-affected villages across districts such as Dhemaji, Majuli, and Barpeta.

For decades, recurring floods have forced schools to shut down for months, resulting in high dropout rates and learning gaps, especially among children from economically weaker families. The floating classrooms now reach students directly at their doorsteps, navigating flooded lanes and river channels to provide daily lessons in mathematics, science, language, and environmental studies.Teachers involved in the initiative say the response from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Attendance has increased significantly, and children who once missed entire academic terms are now able to continue their education uninterrupted. Parents, too, have welcomed the effort, viewing it as a lifeline during disaster seasons when education is often deprioritized in favor of survival.

Beyond academics, the floating classrooms also serve as spaces for social awareness. Sessions on hygiene, climate change, disaster preparedness, and mental well-being are regularly conducted. This holistic approach aims to empower children with knowledge that directly relates to their lived realities in flood-affected regions.

Encouraged by the success of the program, the Assam state education department is reportedly exploring the possibility of expanding floating classrooms under a public-private partnership model. Experts believe this initiative could become a replicable model for other flood-prone states such as Bihar and West Bengal. As climate change intensifies extreme weather events, Assam’s floating classrooms stand as a powerful reminder that innovative, community-driven solutions can bridge gaps and safeguard the future of vulnerable children—one boat, one lesson at a time.
