Thane Municipal Corporation Launches Mega Lake Clean-Up Drive Ahead of Monsoon
Sub-title: Civic body partners with local volunteers to restore water quality and prevent flooding before rainy season

In a proactive move before the upcoming monsoon season, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Tuesday launched a large-scale lake clean-up campaign across major water bodies in the city, including the popular Upvan Lake. The initiative aims to remove plastic waste, silt deposits, and water hyacinth that have accumulated over the past year.
Civic officials stated that desilting operations and garbage removal are being carried out simultaneously to ensure smooth water flow and reduce the risk of waterlogging during heavy rainfall. Over 300 sanitation workers, along with environmental volunteers and local NGOs, are participating in the week-long drive According to TMC authorities, nearly 15 metric tonnes of waste were removed on the first day itself. Officials emphasized that unchecked dumping of plastic and construction debris had affected water quality and aquatic life. Laboratory testing of lake water will also be conducted after the clean-up to monitor improvement levels.
Residents have expressed appreciation for the initiative. Morning walkers and joggers at Upvan Lake said the effort was long overdue. “We come here daily for fresh air and exercise. Cleaner surroundings will encourage more families to visit,” said a local resident from Naupada.
The municipal corporation has also installed temporary awareness booths near the lakes to educate citizens about responsible waste disposal. CCTV monitoring is being strengthened to deter illegal dumping in surrounding areas. Officials warned that strict penalties would be imposed on violators under municipal environmental regulations.
Environmental experts believe that such preventive measures are essential as urban lakes play a critical role in groundwater recharge and flood management. They also serve as vital green spaces in densely populated cities like Thane.
TMC confirmed that similar restoration efforts will be extended to other lakes in the coming months, along with tree plantation activities around lake perimeters to improve biodiversity.
With the monsoon just a few months away, the civic administration hopes the campaign will not only enhance the city’s beauty but also improve its resilience against seasonal flooding.
