In a dramatic late-night operation, the Delhi Police foiled a major jewellery robbery attempt in the bustling Karol Bagh market area, arresting five members of an alleged inter-state criminal gang. Authorities claim the accused were planning to loot gold and diamond ornaments worth nearly ₹5 crore from a prominent showroom.
According to senior officials, police received a tip-off about suspicious movements near the commercial hub late Thursday night. Acting swiftly, a special patrol team was deployed to the area. Officers reportedly noticed a group of men attempting to tamper with the rear shutter of a jewellery store using advanced cutting tools.
When confronted, the suspects tried to flee, leading to a brief chase through the narrow lanes of the market. All five were eventually apprehended. Police recovered iron rods, gas cutters, gloves, and a vehicle allegedly used for reconnaissance over the past week.
Investigators revealed that the gang had been surveying the showroom for several days, posing as customers to study security arrangements and closing schedules. CCTV footage from nearby shops is being examined to establish the extent of their planning and identify possible local collaborators.
Preliminary interrogation suggests the group is linked to similar burglary attempts in neighbouring states. Officials are coordinating with police departments in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to verify the gang’s criminal history.
The showroom owner expressed relief over the timely intervention, stating that the establishment had recently stocked new wedding-season collections, significantly increasing inventory value. Security measures in the market area are now being reviewed, and additional night patrols have been ordered to prevent similar incidents.
Police have registered a case under sections related to attempted robbery, criminal conspiracy, and possession of burglary tools. The accused are currently in custody and will be produced before a metropolitan magistrate for further proceedings.Authorities have urged traders to remain vigilant and ensure that surveillance systems are fully functional. “Community cooperation and timely information play a crucial role in preventing crime,” a senior officer noted.
