Mumbai Police Thwart Cyber Fraud, Recover Nearly ₹40 Lakh
Mumbai, Sept 24:
Mumbai police froze nearly ₹40 lakh that a cyber fraudster extorted from an employee of a private firm, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The victim, who works at a private company, received a call on Wednesday from someone pretending to be a law enforcement officer. The caller falsely claimed that the man had received a suspicious FedEx package and had illegally gained a large amount of money in his bank account.
Threatening to arrest him, the fraudster pressured the victim into transferring ₹39.88 lakh to a bank account.
Shortly after, the man reported the incident to the cyber helpline 1930. Acting quickly, Mumbai police alerted the National Cyber Crime Reporting portal and coordinated with the bank’s nodal officer. Their prompt action allowed them to freeze the funds immediately.

“We have saved the money taken from the complainant’s account,” a police official said.
Authorities are urging citizens to stay alert for such scams and to contact the cyber helpline 1930 if they receive suspicious calls or encounter fraudulent activities.
