Why Mamona is a threat you shouldn’t overlook: The ransomware that doesn’t require the internet

Mamona ransomware is a covert piece of malware that works offline, encrypts files with locally generated keys, and hides its tracks to make detection very challenging. Mamona operates completely offline by abusing the Windows ping command, in contrast to conventional ransomware that depends on distant command-and-control servers. By using this method, attackers can evade common network surveillance systems, making detection challenging. Cybersecurity expert Shubham Singh said that everything Mamona needs to lock your files is built into the malware itself. Once executed, it begins encrypting data autonomously, without needing to contact any server or hacker.

Mamona spreads via physical media, such as external hard drives or USB drives. The ransomware virus begins to operate when a user inadvertently plugs in a compromised device. It frequently evades antivirus software by using obfuscation, hidden files, and autorun scripts. Mamona’s physical devices and human interaction can affect even air-gapped systems.
Organizations must implement stringent device policies, keep regular offline backups, and instruct users on how to handle physical media responsibly due to the covert nature of these threats. Strong endpoint monitoring and hardware-based allowlisting are also essential for protecting isolated systems. After activating, the ransomware creates encryption keys locally and shows a ransom note telling the victim to contact the attacker using a different device.

To keep yourself safe from Mamona and similar threats, Singh suggested several practical steps that is avoid unknown USBs, use offline-capable antivirus tools, keep all software updated, back up data securely, watch for warning signs, and train all users.
