Young and Emerging

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) started the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for 2026 with an outstanding performance by placing bids that broke records for uncapped Indians Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma. Both of these new players were acquired at the same price of ₹14.2 crores and are the costliest uncapped Indians in the Indian Premier League. The auction took place in Abu Dhabi.

Prashant Veer, a left-arm spin bowling all-rounder from Uttar Pradesh, had a humble starting bid of ₹30 lakh. Nevertheless, his keen interest among various teams led to a sudden surge in the bid amount before CSK bagged him. This 20-year-old youngster has impressed the selectors by performing consistently and doing well in high-pressured situations.

Kartik Sharma, an 19 years old wicketkeeper-batter, equals Veer’s record price as CSK is doubling down on young talent. Kartik is known for his aggressive batting approach and strike rate in domestic T20s. Kartik Sharma’s inclusion is an indication of the increasing demand for exciting young Indian batters in shorter formats.

These two signings broke all records of uncapped Indian players purchased at an IPL auction, thus flagging an important change in what is being prioritized by franchises. Now, leagues are eager to spend heavily on future stars rather than bank solely on established internationals.

The aggressive bidding by CSK is indicative of their long-term approach towards team management, where they have been working towards developing Indian cricketers into winners. Though the prices come along with certain expectations, it seems that the team is confident about the two having the required potential.

On a whole, Veer and Sharma’s record bids signal that the face of the IPL auction is undergoing a shift, with domestic talents emerging as highly valued additions, never before seen in Indian cricket.
