Supreme Court Seeks Centre’s Response on Uniform Civil Code Implementation

Hearing Sparks Fresh Political Debate Ahead of State Elections

New Delhi

The Supreme Court on Thursday sought a detailed response from the Union Government regarding the status and roadmap of implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), reviving political debate on one of the country’s most discussed constitutional issues. The matter came up during a hearing on petitions seeking clarity on the Centre’s position and timeline for framing common civil laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

A bench of the apex court observed that while the Constitution envisions a Uniform Civil Code under the Directive Principles of State Policy, any move toward implementation must be handled with sensitivity and wide consultation. The court directed the Centre to file an updated affidavit outlining steps taken so far and consultations conducted with stakeholders.

The development quickly became a focal point in political circles. Leaders from the ruling coalition reiterated their commitment to ensuring equality before the law and argued that a common civil framework would promote national integration and gender justice. They maintained that extensive consultations are underway with legal experts and community representatives.Opposition parties, however, cautioned against what they described as “rushed policymaking.” Several leaders emphasized the need to respect India’s diverse cultural and religious traditions. They called for broader dialogue and consensus-building before introducing any legislation in Parliament.

Legal experts noted that the Supreme Court’s direction does not mandate immediate enactment but seeks clarity on the government’s preparedness and intent. Analysts believe the issue could become a significant political talking point in upcoming state elections, influencing campaign narratives across regions.Outside the court premises, representatives of civil society organizations expressed varied opinions. While some welcomed the renewed focus on legal uniformity and women’s rights, others urged the government to prioritize economic and social issues.

The next hearing is expected later this month, after the Centre submits its response. As the matter progresses, it is likely to remain at the center of national political discourse.
