Why Is Sonam Wangchuk on a Hunger Strike ? Here’s the Complete Story Behind His Protest

From education reforms to Ladakh's constitutional rights, the engineer-turned-activist says his fight is about protecting India's future.

Most people know Sonam Wangchuk as the real-life inspiration behind Aamir Khan’s character in 3 Idiots. But today, the award-winning engineer, education reformer, and climate activist is once again making headlines this time for his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

So, why is he protesting ??

According to Wangchuk, his fast is about two major issues. First, he wants urgent reforms in India’s education system, raising concerns over examination irregularities and demanding greater accountability in the way competitive exams are conducted. Second, he is once again seeking constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, including stronger protection for its fragile environment, local culture, and people’s rights. He argues that rapid and unchecked development without adequate legal safeguards could permanently damage the Himalayan region.

The hunger strike began on June 28, after Wangchuk said repeated appeals to the government had not produced meaningful action. As the protest has continued, his health has reportedly weakened, drawing support from citizens, activists, and public figures across the country. Wangchuk has also urged people not to see him as a hero but to become active citizens themselves.

Whether one agrees with his demands or not, the protest has reignited a national conversation about education, environmental protection, and the future of Ladakh. It also reminds us that democracy is strengthened when citizens peacefully raise issues they believe deserve attention.
