Osman Hadi: Who Is He, and Why Is His Death Causing Unrests Throughout Bangladesh?

A deadly shooting of popular student leader Osman Hadi has triggered mass protests, violence, and political instability in Bangladesh, making tensions prior to crucial national elections worse

Death of Student Leader Ignites Nationwide Fury

Osman Hadi is a prominent youth activist and one of the most recognizable figures in the Bangladesh protest movement ignited by the students in the year 2024. Serving as one of the principal organising figures in the Inqilab Mancha, he has received much recognition for his work with the young generation, as well as for the criticism aimed at the already established political systems. His rising popularity made him a likely contestant in the imminent political scene, with elections scheduled for the year 2026.

Hadi was shot by unknown assailants in Dhaka earlier this month, leaving him critically wounded. He was subsequently moved to a hospital in Singapore for specialized treatment, but died on December 18 due to his injuries. The news of his death went viral, inducing strong emotions, especially among students, who saw him as a symbol of struggle and change.

The outburst was not long in spilling over into the streets as protests broke out in Dhaka and other large cities. The protesters occupied the roads, calling for justice and claiming that influential quarters were muffling their voices. Some of these protests turned violent as the protesters clashed with security forces.

Politically, the tensions have also increased, especially with attacks on media organizations accused by the protesters of being pro-regime and pro-foreign powers. Slogans with anti-India sentiments have also emerged in the protests, showing frustration with foreign influence in local politics. The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has called for a national period of mourning and conducted an investigation, advising the nation to remain calm as it faces one of its most challenging times in recent years.
