Maharashtra Approves ₹837-Crore Cyber Safety Project to Protect Citizens from Online Crimes
Mumbai — In a major step toward tackling the surge in online frauds and digital threats, the Maharashtra cabinet has approved a ₹837-crore cyber safety project aimed at strengthening the state’s cybercrime prevention and investigation capabilities.
With cyber scams increasingly targeting ordinary people — from elderly citizens to students and professionals — the government says the goal is to make reporting and resolving such cases faster, more efficient, and more accessible.
A Technology-Driven Safety Net
According to the government statement, the project brings together a wide array of modern digital tools under one integrated system. Key components include:
-
Centralised Control and Command Centre
-
Technology-Enabled Investigation Units
-
Centre of Excellence for Research and Training
-
Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT)
-
Cloud-Based Data Centre
-
Security Operations Centre
These upgrades are expected to help law enforcement track cybercriminals more effectively and respond swiftly to emerging threats.
24×7 Helpline for Citizens
One of the most citizen-friendly features of the project is a round-the-clock complaint registration call centre, where people can report cybercrimes at any time — without needing to visit a police station.
Authorities believe this will encourage more people, especially those hesitant or unaware of how to report online frauds, to seek help immediately.
Stronger Investigations, Better Convictions
The government emphasized that the project will empower cyber police with advanced tools and skilled manpower, enabling them not just to detect crimes faster but also secure convictions through solid digital evidence.
Support for Sugar Cooperatives
In a separate decision, the cabinet also approved financial relief for struggling sugar cooperative factories. These units will now be eligible for loans from state cooperative banks, backed by government assurance — offering much-needed support to the agricultural sector.
With cyber fraud becoming one of the fastest-growing crimes in Maharashtra, the new project comes as a much-needed safeguard for citizens navigating an increasingly digital world.
