IMD issues orange alert for Puducherry region; authorities urge caution

It is foreseen that heavy to very heavy rainfall is most likely, thus residents are advised to be vigilant

Administration on high alert, precautionary measures underway

The IMD has issued an orange alert over parts of Puducherry and its neighbourhood, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days. The local administration has been asked to be vigilant, activate emergency response teams, and take all necessary measures in case of flooding or water-logging in low-lying areas.

Forecasters said rainfall could increase over low‑lying and coastal areas, while there could be gusty winds and thunderstorms in some areas. People have been advised against traveling unless necessary and taking necessary precautions, including staying away from the water bodies, and to be ready to move if the situation deteriorates.

The regional administration has recommended that residents keep emergency contact numbers available, tie up outdoor belongings, and be very careful around rivers and drainage systems. Schools, transport services, and emergency response units are being placed under scrutiny in preparation, should the weather situation worsen.

Where the orange alert signals a heightened risk, the IMD stressed that it does not imply a certain imminent disaster. Public utilities were advised to keep abreast of the official weather updates and initiate precautions to protect life and property.
