OpenAI Launches GPT-5.1 with a more friendly tone and new personality presets.
The upgraded AI model corrects GPT-5's "robotic" voice, providing users with options for personality variants and enhanced reasoning.

A Smarter, More Human ChatGPT
OpenAI has introduced the release of GPT-5.1, an up-to-date iteration of the famous ChatGPT model designed to make conversations more natural, warm, and user-friendly. Indeed, its update directly relates to user feedback on GPT-5, which many thought was too formal, detached, and inconsistent compared to the previous versions.
The new release comes in two flavors: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking; the former is more tuned for speedy, everyday responses, while the latter is aimed at deeper reasoning, coding, and analytical tasks.
First, there are eight personality presets: Friendly, Professional, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, Cynical, and the Default tone. These allow users to turn up or down how serious or playful the AI is. OpenAI has also fine-tuned warmth levels, brevity, and even emoji usage so conversations feel more human and tailored to user preference.
Apart from tone and personality, GPT-5.1 is also more accurate in math, programming, and logical reasoning. This model performs better according to benchmark tests such as AIME 2025 and Codeforces. Its answers are also clearer with fewer unnecessary lines of filler text.
It will initially roll out for subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Go, and Business, before reaching free-tier users. API developers will have access soon. With GPT-5.1, OpenAI seems to be merging intelligence with empathy, turning its chatbot from an able assistant into a more relatable digital companion.
