Heavy rains trigger holiday for schools and colleges across Tamil Nadu
Various districts declare holiday for students on November 24, 2025 following potential cyclonic system over Bay of Bengal

Authorities act early as weather system strengthens
Due to the prevailing rain and prospects of a strengthened weather system over Tamil Nadu, various districts announced a holiday for schools, and in many places, even colleges, on Monday. They issued such orders as a low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca is likely to develop into a depression and then into Cyclone ‘Senyar’. This is a precautionary measure to avert all risks as the system approaches the Bay of Bengal.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast by the IMD over many coastal and adjoining districts of Tamil Nadu, including parts of Puducherry.
With these warnings, district administrations have announced the closure of schools in districts like Kallakurichi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, and Karur. According to authorities, the move would ensure safety in the wake of inclement weather.
Forecasts warn that many of these districts are likely to see thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy showers. Puducherry and Karaikal have also declared a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges in view of the IMD forecast. The officials said this is purely a precautionary move, in anticipation of worse conditions through the day.
The state government and disaster response teams are closely monitoring the weather system, as it could strengthen further and subsequently create disruptions in day-to-day life. People have been advised to stay indoors as much as possible, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow updates from local authorities until conditions stabilize.
