Veteran Hindi writer Vinod Kumar Shukla, considered among the strongest voices of magic realism in Indian literature, died here after a brief illness. He was 89. He was undergoing treatment at AIIMS due to respiratory complications. His demise is a big loss to the literary world, as Shukla was among the most powerful writers of modern Hindi literature. During his long innings, he was bestowed with a number of prestigious honours such as Sahitya Akademi Award and Jnanpith Award, etc. for his invaluable contribution to Indian letters.
He was born and brought up in Rajnandgaon, now in Chhattisgarh. Besides drawing heavily from the immediate surroundings of his life, Shukla wove an inimitable narrative style. His writing concerned the lives of common people in familiar settings but was resilient with underlying emotions that elevated the mundane. Works like Naukar Ki Kameez and Ek Chuppi Jagah were representative of this ability to merge poetic sensitivity with prose, on one hand, and quiet challenge to literary conventions with accessibility and deep humanness on the other.
