Navi Mumbai Launches Smart Traffic Command Center to Ease Peak-Hour Congestion

AI-powered system aims to cut travel time, improve road safety, and support emergency response

Navi Mumbai | 9 February 2026 — In a major step toward smoother urban mobility, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on Monday inaugurated a Smart Traffic Command Center at CBD Belapur. The facility is designed to monitor traffic flow across key junctions and corridors using artificial intelligence, real-time cameras, and adaptive signal systems, with the goal of reducing congestion during peak hours.

The newly launched center integrates live feeds from more than 200 high-definition cameras installed across arterial roads, railway station zones, and high-density residential pockets. These feeds are analyzed by AI software that detects bottlenecks, accidents, and unusual traffic patterns within seconds. Based on the analysis, traffic signals automatically adjust their timing to allow smoother vehicle movement, especially during office rush hours.

According to civic officials, pilot testing of the system over the past month showed promising results. Average waiting time at major junctions such as Vashi Plaza, Nerul East, and Belapur Sector 15 reportedly dropped by 18–22 percent during morning and evening peaks. Emergency vehicles were also given priority clearance through synchronized green corridors, helping ambulances reach hospitals faster.

Traffic police officials said the command center will play a crucial role in road safety. Automated alerts are generated for signal jumping, wrong-side driving, and illegal parking. E-challans will be issued digitally, reducing the need for on-spot intervention and improving transparency. Authorities emphasized that the system is meant to encourage discipline rather than penalize drivers unnecessarily.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, particularly daily commuters who spend long hours on the road. “If this actually saves time and reduces stress, it’s a big relief for working professionals,” said a Belapur-based IT employee who travels daily to Vashi. However, some citizens urged the administration to ensure proper maintenance of cameras and signals to avoid technical glitches.

NMMC officials confirmed that the project is part of Navi Mumbai’s broader Smart City roadmap. In the next phase, the system will be linked with weather alerts and public transport data, allowing authorities to proactively manage traffic during heavy rain, public events, or sudden disruptions.

With rapid urban growth and rising vehicle numbers, the Smart Traffic Command Center marks a significant local effort to make Navi Mumbai’s roads safer, faster, and more commuter-friendly.
