Mumbai: Police Recover Nearly Rs 40 Lakh After Man Reports Cyber Fraud on 1930 Helpline
Mumbai: A swift response by Mumbai police helped recover almost Rs 40 lakh that had been fraudulently taken from a city resident, an official said on Thursday.
The victim, who works for a private company, received a call on Wednesday from a person pretending to be a law enforcement officer. The caller falsely accused him of receiving a suspicious FedEx parcel and illegally obtaining a large sum of money in his bank account.
Threatening him with arrest, the fraudster pressured the man into transferring Rs 39.88 lakh to a specified bank account.
Realizing he may have been duped, the man immediately contacted the cyber helpline 1930 and reported the incident. The alert Mumbai police then informed the National Cyber Crime Reporting (NCRP) portal and reached out to the nodal officer of the concerned bank.
The bank acted promptly and froze the transferred amount. “We have successfully secured the money that was taken from the complainant,” the official said.
