Fault in Airbus A320 Software Causes Global Disruptions; Over 350 Indian Planes Grounded

The new compulsory software update issued by Airbus for its A320 aircraft family will temporarily ground hundreds of jets in India amid growing concerns over widespread delays and flight cancellations

Why the A320 Fleet Needs an Immediate Software Update

Air travel worldwide is facing significant delays after Airbus ordered an urgent software correction across its A320 series, the most used narrow-body aircraft globally. The directive covers almost 6,000 jets around the world and comes after a recent in-flight anomaly that investigators linked to possible interference by solar radiation.

The worst-hit are Indian carriers, such as IndiGo and Air India, with upwards of 350 aircraft in their combined fleets set to receive the mandatory update. With each jet required to stay out of the skies for two to three days while the fix is done, disruptions could persist into early next week.

The necessary update primarily consists of rolling back to an earlier software version, which may take approximately 30 minutes per aircraft. Still, some older jets may require additional hardware checks that could extend the maintenance time and add to the scheduling issues of airlines.

Carriers have started to warn passengers of unavoidable delays and cancellations throughout the weekend. With so substantial a percentage of the global fleet of A320s temporarily parked for safety compliance, travellers worldwide may be considerably inconvenienced until operations stabilize.
